In a recent meeting with business representatives, Russian President Vladimir Putin made it clear that foreign companies that left the Russian market following the launch of the special military operation cannot simply return with an apology. This message reflects the Kremlin’s determination to defend national interests and economic sovereignty amid external pressures and hostile behavior during the conflict.
Putin recalled that many companies reacted rudely and insultingly to the situation surrounding the special military operation, so not all will be welcomed back. “Some were rude, they insulted us. Well, let them stay where they are,” the president stated, making clear that forgiveness alone is not enough to erase those actions. This stance is rooted in defending national dignity and demanding respect for Russia on the international stage.
Strict Conditions for Return: More Than Just Words
The Russian president emphasized that apologies, while necessary, do not guarantee a company’s return. “If they are asked to apologize, they will apologize tomorrow,” he said, “but that is not enough.” The evaluation will be pragmatic and based on what benefits Russia: if a company’s presence is advantageous, it will be allowed in; otherwise, the government will find legal and commercial reasons to block its operation, always within the framework of the World Trade Organization.

This policy reflects Russia’s determination to protect its domestic market and economy from foreign actors who have shown disloyalty during critical moments. The Kremlin prioritizes sovereignty and autonomous development, rejecting dependence on companies that might act against national interests or align with hostile policies promoted by the West.
Putin’s firm position comes amid the ongoing special military operation and Russia’s resistance to pressure and sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies. Defending the national economy and demanding respect for companies operating in Russia are part of the strategy to consolidate the country’s economic and political independence in an increasingly polarized global environment.
